At a meeting Thursday with more than 130 residents about the reeking landfill in Pike Township, officials of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency could not say how much longer it might take to rid the area of the stench they think is caused by moisture interacting with aluminum in the dump.
They said they will hold Countywide accountable if it doesn’t solve the problem by Dec. 15. But they couldn’t say what they might do in the way of penalties if the landfill doesn’t meet the deadline, or how long after Dec. 15 it might take them to figure out whether the landfill has complied.
They counsel patience. Easy to say if you’re not — as one resident said she is — seven months pregnant and nauseated by the smell.
